Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our teaching approach
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy focuses on helping students truly understand and enjoy mathematics. I believe in developing logical thinking and conceptual understanding rather than memorization. Students are encouraged to think through problems mentally before using pen and paper, which helps build stronger problem-solving skills and mathematical intuition. Most importantly students are taught to apply what they learn in real life.
What age groups do you teach?
I teach students from Kindergarten through 12th grade and beyond. However, for children aged 8 and under, I recommend letting them enjoy life and play in nature first. We can focus on structured mathematics learning when they’re ready. This approach ensures a natural and enjoyable progression in their mathematical journey.
How are the classes structured?
Each class is carefully structured into three parts: 10-15 minutes of speed mathematics and mental calculations, 30-40 minutes focused on core concepts and problem-solving, and 5-10 minutes of enrichment activities covering mathematics history, science, literature, or puzzles. This balanced approach keeps students engaged while building comprehensive mathematical skills.
What types of mathematics competitions do you prepare students for?
I prepare students for various mathematics competitions including AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, and Math Olympiads. I also train students for the Math Kangaroo competition, where my students have achieved remarkable success. For instance, at Cherrywood Elementary School, we had 14 students in the top 20 in 2023 and 10 students in 2024.
What is your background and experience?
I hold a PhD from North Carolina State University and a B.Tech from IIT Madras. I’ve been a two-time Indian National Puzzle Champion (2001, 2003) and represented India in World Puzzle Championships. Professionally, I worked at Maxlinear from 2010 to 2022, rising from design engineer to senior manager, and hold 7 patents. In 2022, I chose to focus on teaching mathematics full-time to make a broader impact.
How flexible is the class schedule?
Classes are typically one hour per week, and I offer flexible scheduling to accommodate students’ needs. There’s no homework burden on students or parents, and I provide flexible rescheduling options for missed classes. Classes are conducted online with interactive learning tools, and I’m also available for one-on-one targeted sessions.
What makes your teaching approach unique?
My style is completely based on all the knowledge I have acquired combined with my own application of it. I strongly believe every child is different and cookie cutter approach used by Math Coaching institutes will not work for all. I have a small class size and ensure individual attention to each student. Course content and problems to be solved will be tailored for each student.
Do you offer both regular and competition-focused classes?
Yes, I offer classes for both students who want to learn and enjoy mathematics at their own pace, as well as those preparing for competitions. The teaching approach is tailored to each student’s goals, whether it’s building strong fundamentals or preparing for advanced competitions.
How can I determine if your teaching style is right for my child?
The best way is to book a trial class where both you and your child can experience my teaching approach firsthand. I believe in making mathematics enjoyable while building strong foundations, and this trial session will help you understand how I adapt my methods to suit each student’s needs and learning style.
